As a so-called spiral galaxy, our Milky Way galaxy contains majestic arms of stars, dust, and gas that emanate from a central bulge area. Our Solar System resides in one of the outer arms of the Milky Way. When we look toward the center of the Milky Way, as we do in this photograph, we see a swath of starlight across the sky. This, however, is only a small percentage of the total stars there, as the dust and gas block much of our view in visible light.

Vía Láctea Sobre los Baobabs

Como las denominadas galaxias espirales, nuestra Vía Láctea contiene brazos majestuosos de estrellas, polvo y gas que emanan de un abultamiento central. Nuestro Sistema Solar reside en uno de estos brazos externos de la Vía Láctea. Cuando miramos hacia el centro de la Vía Láctea, como lo hacemos en esta fotografía, vemos una franja de luz estelar que cruza el cielo. Esto, sin embargo, es solo un pequeño porcentaje del total de estrellas que hay ahí, ya que el polvo y el gas bloquean gran parte de nuestra vista de la luz visible.
